What is digital health?

Digital health is about transforming healthcare through technology. From telehealth and virtual health to cutting-edge tools such as AI, big data, and genomics, digital health enhances the way we deliver care and manage patient wellbeing. It empowers individuals to take control of their health, providing better access to care, especially for remote communities.

The World Health Organisation (WHO)considers digital health essential for improving health equity and achieving universal health coverage. Much like a country's road infrastructure supports the movement of goods and people, digital health enables the smooth functioning of healthcare systems, reducing errors, enhancing outcomes, and driving greater equity in care.

The WHO promotes the adoption and scale-up of digital health with three objectives:

  • Turning data into action: Promoting data-sharing standards and implementing digital solutions for informed decision-making.
  • Enhancing knowledge: Using new technologies to connect experts and share research, bypassing traditional barriers such as physical meetings and print journals.
  • Aligning innovations with country needs: Proactively identifying and scaling innovations that meet real-world health needs, avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach.
