Brendan Swan

Brendan is obsessed with the promise of Personalised Healthcare and works full-time to ensure it is delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand in a timely and equitable manner. He has a strong passion for translating scientific discoveries into real-world health outcomes and is focused on the integration of new technologies into the healthsystem to improve outcomes for patients and efficiencies for the system itself.

He believes that to realise the potential of Personalised Healthcare we need to work towards a solution that places equity, Te Tiriti, data sovereignty, safety, and future proofing at its heart. Key steps towards this future include:

• Ensuring digital health systems are able to integrate the new data types originating from new technologies

• Combining them with the existing data streams in a fully interoperable manner

• Providing intelligent, holistic analysis of all the available information

• Producing Personalised Healthcare reports for each individual

• Creating a system that supports individuals to take ownership of their health data and outcomes

Brendan began his journey towards Personalised Healthcare with a PhD at Auckland University that used next-generation sequencing to provide personalised diagnoses for rare neurodevelopmental cases. He then worked as Chief Scientist for a company called SelfDecode, based in California, that provides an online platform that integrates genomic, bloods, and lifestyle information to create personalised reports and recommendations for its members. Following this he worked as Chief Scientist for a company called Edison, based in Parnell, Auckland, that provided personalised preventative healthcare for its members. Now Brendan is the Personalised Healthcare lead for Roche Products NZ and works full-time towards ensuring all New Zealanders gain timely and equitable access to the benefits that Personalised Healthcare offers.

Brendan's hope for the Emerging Personalised Healthcare Industry Group (EPHIG) is to share ideas, promote robust discussions, and co-create visions of what Personalised Healthcare looks like for Aotearoa New Zealand. His ultimate goal is to foster a passion and enthusiasm for this vision that leads to action and tangible benefits for all New Zealanders.
