Why is it important to formally integrate Sex and Gender into Clinical care?  Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is aligning a new HISO standard to the international HL7(TM) Gender Harmony Project.  This standard is intended to lay the groundwork to address the clinical need around the collection and sharing of gender and sex-related information.   While the new HISO standard is being based on the international HL7 Gender Harmony project, this is unlikely to be implementable within our current landscape constraints and so we have landed on an interim guidance that will allow us to take a positive, non regrettable, coordinated step forward, and will enhance equitable access to healthcare and provide safer, more person-centred care for everyone.

We have worked closely with transgender, takatāpui, and non-binary health and clinical experts to ensure any new standard effectively addresses the specific inequities and discrimination faced by these communities.

We need your support to ensure we establish clear guidance on the transparent and consensual collection and sharing of information, safeguarding the privacy and safety of all patients.

We warmly invite you to join us for an engaging briefing session where you will:

  • Contribute to person-centred care while balancing clinical relevance.
  • Understand the critical role this standard will play in tackling health inequities.
  • Find out more about the national interim guidance currently in place and the next steps towards finalisation.
